• Shift the transmission to neutral
• Turn off the ignition switch
• Apply the brakes and pull over

Good information even if you don’t drive a Toyota. This happened to me in my 2004 Honda Civic a few times. I finally figured out it was the floor mat that was jamming up the gas pedal. I fortunately was quick thinking and pulled my emergency brake. I’m also very aware of the floor mats in my vehicles now.

I once had a similar problem in a Fusion I was test driving. The pedal got matted to the floor, because my boot got stuck between the pedal and the bottom of the console. I just steered a lot, didn’t hit anyone, and lit up the tires. It is not the correct way to handle the situation, I admit, but it was fun, and quite showy!
